What is SS-31?
SS-31 (elamipretide) is a four-residue peptide with an alternating aromatic-cationic structure. That structure is the defining feature: it allows the peptide to concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane and bind cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively there.
Because cardiolipin is required for the proper organisation of the electron transport chain, the published research examines the peptide as a tool for studying mitochondrial function directly, rather than acting through a conventional cell-surface receptor. It is unusual in this catalog for having a defined subcellular target rather than a receptor target.
