HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is not a simple peptide — it is a glycoprotein hormone built from two different polypeptide chains held together non-covalently, and decorated with carbohydrate groups. Those sugar chains are functionally essential rather than decorative: they govern how long the hormone survives in circulation.
Its alpha chain is shared with LH, FSH and TSH; the beta chain is what distinguishes it and determines receptor specificity. It acts at the LH/CG receptor, and the extended circulating half-life conferred by its glycosylation is the principal reason it is used as a research tool in place of luteinizing hormone itself.
