KPV is a tripeptide — lysine, proline, valine — corresponding to the final three residues of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The published rationale for studying it is that this short fragment appears to retain the anti-inflammatory activity associated with the parent hormone while lacking its pigmentary activity.
That separation is what makes it interesting as a research tool: it allows the inflammatory and melanocortin-pigmentation properties of α-MSH to be examined independently. Most published work uses models of intestinal and dermal inflammation.
